Fire Safety Engineering

Fire Safety Engineering is the application of scientific and engineering principles based on the understanding of the effects of fire, the reaction and behaviour of people to fire and how to protect people, property and the environment.

When designing your building, our engineers will take into account the ‘total fire risk management package’ specific to the building.

Our expertise lie in areas of fire dynamics, means of warning & escape, evacuation modelling, smoke control, fire suppression, structural fire resistance and fire and rescue intervention.

Forensic Investigation

A detailed forensic investigation into the origin, cause and circumstances surrounding a fire or explosion incident can provide Insurers, businesses and property owners/occupants with a wealth of information when trying to understand the sequence of events which resulted in the incident.

Based on this information, our clients can assess how the incident occurred, implement measures to prevent such an incident from occurring again thereby improving safety and identify if a viable route exists where a recovery of financial losses against a third party can be pursued.

Fire Safety Design

The Building Regulations set ‘requirements’ which must be met. These requirements ensure the building is designed and constructed to ensure reasonable standards of health and safety for people and to provide reasonable facilities to assist firefighters in the protection of life.

We can provide fire safety support throughout a project from concept to handover and use of the building. We design buildings to prescriptive (code-compliant) or performance-based (fire engineered) design which achieve compliance with the fire safety aspects of the Building Regulations and requirements of fire safety legislation.

Fire Safety Certificate

In Ireland, under the Building Control Act 1990/2007, a Fire Safety Certificate is required where the requirements of Part B of the Building Regulations will apply. This includes most new buildings (except a single dwelling house), where certain works to existing buildings is carried out and where a material alteration or change of use applies. We have the expertise to assist you in applying to the local authority for a Fire Safety Certificate.

Building Safety Act

Fundamental changes in building and fire safety legislation have been introduced through the Building Safety Act 2022 to improve standards so that people will be and feel safer in their homes. We can support duty holders in fulfilling their duties under the Building Safety Act, assist with preparation of Safety Case reports and resident engagement strategies for new and existing buildings.

We can prepare Fire Statements, provide the necessary fire safety design support and information for the Building Regulations and building control stages and assist in the provision of information for the building end user(s) to maintain the ‘Golden Thread’ of information

Fire Risk Assessment

At its core, a Fire Risk Assessment is a review of the potential risk of fire on your premises, the existing measures in place and identification of further measures to keep people safe.

In premises where the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, The Fire (Scotland) Act 2005 and The Fire and Rescue Services (Northern Ireland) Order 2006 applies it is a legal requirement for the individual or company in control to make sure a suitable and sufficient Fire Risk Assessment is carried out by a competent person.

Regent Fire Consultants are competent to carry out your fire risk assessment and are third party certificated to the Life Safety Fire Risk Assessment Silver Scheme and BAFE SP205 Life Safety Fire Risk Assessment Scheme through the National Security Inspectorate (NSI).

Fire Risk Management

Fire history tells us that one of the main contributing factors of deaths from fire in commercial and industrial buildings is as a result of poor Fire Risk Management.

Following the principles of British Standard code of practice BS 9997 we can support you through the process of developing an appropriate Fire Risk Management Strategy to deal with the risks posed to both people and your organisation. We can work with you to produce policy and procedures which fit with your organisation’s operational requirements enabling you to manage fire risk effectively.

Where an organisation has existing strategies and systems in place, we can audit current systems and strategies and provide detailed gap analysis to identify any areas for improvement.

Expert Witness & Technical Opinion

An expert witness is a person who provides technical analysis and opinion on matters which require expert skill and knowledge. The role of an expert is paramount in elucidating complex technical matters with precision.

Our experts have significant skills, knowledge and experience in the field of fire safety and forensic investigation. We can assist with investigation, technical opinion, arbitration, dispute resolution and litigation in criminal and civil matters related to fire safety and forensic investigation.

Fire Safety Law & Compliance

Failing to comply with fire safety legislation can be a criminal offence and can lead to significant fines and/or imprisonment. Where an organisation is facing legal proceedings being taken against it, we can advise on liability, support with defence and assist with mitigation.

We can assist by liaising with the enforcing authority on your behalf to mitigate the impact on you and your business whilst bringing about an adequate level of safety. What sets us apart from our competitors is our significant experience with enforcement and prosecution within UK Fire and Rescue Services and our work as expert witnesses.

Computational Fluid Dynamics and Evacuation Modelling

Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) modelling is a tool used by fire engineers which enables computer simulation of fluid flow and heat transfer. Engineers are able to gain an understanding of potential fire conditions through analysis of heat transfer, smoke movement, radiation and ventilation.

In fire safety design we use CFD and evacuation modelling to demonstrate how engineering solutions are effective in providing an equivalent level of safety to that of a code-compliant design solution.

Not only is our strength in the development of CFD and evacuation models for design projects, we also have extensive experience reviewing CFD and evacuation analysis undertaken by other Fire Safety Engineering practices and in utilising modelling to support fire investigation by reconstructing fire scenarios.

Independent Peer Review

Peer Review is an independent and unbiased evaluation of the principles, judgement and application of a process.

Choosing the most appropriate technical expertise can sometimes be a challenge when deciding upon an organisation to instruct for a peer review. At Regent Fire Consultants we can offer our clients highly qualified individuals and experienced individuals to peer review any aspect of a fire safety and fire investigative project.

Engaging with our team you will have access to chartered engineers, fire safety engineers, consultants with a Fire and Rescue Service and building control background and forensic investigators who can evaluate the quality of fire safety, engineering and investigative work.
